Judy Evans
I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Calgary Chapter.
I have been doing art for nearly sixty years. I have had formal training in composition and design, drawing and painting as part of my teacher training at The University of Calgary. While working as an elementary school teacher, I taught art in the classroom for several years.
I have continued my art education through numerous courses and workshops at the University of Calgary, Alberta College of Art and Red Deer College, (Series). During that time, I was an active member and participated in many art shows with the Calgary Community Painters Society.
I have also continued taking various workshops through the FCA Calgary Chapter and from other professional artists such as Jean Pederson, Bobbi Dunlop, Jane Romanishko and Liba Labik.
After taking early retirement from the Calgary Board of Education in 1998, I was fortunate to have a studio at Artpoint for a number of years.
Since our retirement, my husband and I have traveled extensively. That has been a source of inspiration for much of my work in recent years.
Originally working primarily in watercolour, I have experimented with many media, including mixed media, oil, acrylic, cold wax, gouache and pastel.
Most of my work is figurative and primarily referential. Currently, I am enjoying figurative watercolour painting again, sometimes incorporating gouache.
I enjoy working from the live model whenever possible, but subjects for my work are often from photographs taken from my travels and of my extended family. I also have a strong interest in the landscape and natural subjects, particularly those near our cabin in Southwestern Alberta.
Although my work is mostly realistic, I try to work expressively, keeping in mind the abstract elements of art, which are the foundation for successful painting, whether referential or non-referential.
